On the Road to a New Life

He had lost his job a year earlier. Every night, he opened his neighbor’s wrinkled copy of the day’s paper and perused the help wanted section. And every night, he was disappointed once again. There were simply no jobs to be had in this country!

But life went on, and there were plenty of expenses – schoolbooks, clothing for his children, groceries, tuition… the list went on and on.

They were plunged into a whirlwind of debt. They borrowed from the bank, they borrowed from grandparents, and all of their siblings gave them maaser. The gemach managers refused to extend any more loans, after two of his previous loans had to be paid by his guarantors. It seemed that he had exhausted every possible means of regaining financial stability. What could the family do?

As a last resort, he called the Kupa shel Tzedaka. Maybe, just maybe, they would be able to help.

Indeed, help was soon on the way. The Kupa constructed a recovery plan for the family, and they began receiving monthly support and rehabilitative aid. The Kupa’s professional staff decided that instead of contending with eight different creditors and a complicated network of loans, it would be best to consolidate all of the family’s debts into a single loan. To that end, the Kupa managed to procure a loan with good terms from a gemach, and a reasonable payment plan was set up.

Finally, they were able to breathe again. The monthly payments to the gemach were feasible for the family, especially after the father was set up with a new job.

The Kupa’s intervention had saved another family from collapse.
